Book Review :: The Woman in the Window
Already in development as a major film from Fox starring Amy Adams, The Woman in the Window is a powerful Hitchcockian thriller about an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime in a neighboring house.
In 2018 I made a promise to myself to read more. A lover of books I used to be a voracious reader and vowed to become so again. I’m a painfully slow to finish my books and I struggle to keep my eyes open when I read in bed at night. For every book I read, I listen to one on Amazon’s Audible. I typically read my more serious selections, memoirs and such and listen to those stories that are lighter or more entertaining. Looking for something to listen to one night I stumbled across this title and decided to preview a sample. I was immediately hooked and downloaded the book.
What’s real? What isn’t?
Slightly reminiscent of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window is psychological thriller told from the point of view of Anna, the main character. Anna lives alone in her New York City brownstone. An agoraphobe, she’s unable to leave her home and keeps herself occupied watching old Noir movies and drinking too much red wine and peering out her window, spying on her neighbors.
When Anna gazes out her window one night she sees something she shouldn’t inside the home of her new neighbors and her world begins to crumble. We learn more about her past, the causes of her agoraphobia, and with varying unexpected twists and turns, Anna’s world begins to fall apart.
As we start to put the clues together we have to wonder what is real and what is imagined? Is our red wine loving narrator trustworthy? AJ Finn creates a sophisticated and powerful psychological thriller in the vein of Hitchcock.
I plowed through this quite quickly, taking breaks during the day to listen to a chapter or two (the chapters are really short) when I had a moment or when in the car, en route to clients and while running errands. I was hooked and riveted until the end. If you’re interested in listening to an excerpt, ordering the book or downloading the audio book, click here.
