Campaign furniture seems to be all the rage lately. And I simply adore it. It's origins were humble, originally designed to be easily assembled and quickly folded up for use by traveling armies. Campaign furniture has has been around for centuries. It wasn't until the 1800's that well known furniture companies as Sheraton, Hepplewhite, and Chippendale redesigned many of their pieces to "knock down" for the British army. Furniture needed not only to be portable, lightweight, and exceptionally durable, but also comfortable and beautiful to ensure the British officers the luxuries of home while traveling to distant lands. These pieces, impervious to weather and virtually indestructible, blended elegance with timeless functionality and elegance. There visually stunning, traditional pieces are both timeless and timely. I love the campaign chest in it's original (restored) wood above, but I must admit to being drawn to the bright, colorful ones of today.
