A day at The Cloisters in New York City

If you have more than 1 child you very well know that trying to get everyone to agree on an activity is an exercise in futility. If you have 3 children, or more, chances are that no one will agree and whatever plans you've set in motion will come crashing down.

Yesterday I made plans and I told the children where we were going, to New York City, to see the Cloisters. You can never go wrong with a drive into the city (we're just under an hour) with my kids. When they asked what the Cloisters were I simply said "You'll see." I didn't want to explain and be met with someone whining and negative. By not knowing where they were going, the kids had no expectations and therefore the day would be a good one. I've learned, over the years, that the best trips are those when there are no expectations.

The Cloisters sit high atop a hill in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens is a branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art that is devoted to medieval art and architecture. Featuring 5,000 works of art, including magnificent sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, and the celebrated Unicorn Tapestries. Explore beautifully re-created plant, flower, and herb gardens of the Middle Ages.

We ended up having an unexpectedly wonderful day. I marvelled in the art, the artifacts and the celebrated Unicorn tapestries. The boys had fun running around through the grounds and the recreated cloisters. Below are images I captured through my lens. If you live in or near the city or plan a visit to the city you must put The Cloisters on your places to see - especially when the weather is nice. I grew up in the city and in the 20+ years I lived in Manhattan I had never been before. I will certainly be back this summer!
